Why is Patient Participation Important?

Patients and carers know best what it is like to live with a disease or to receive treatment. That is why the EU HTA Regulation includes patients and carers in both the Joint Clinical Assessment (JCA) and Joint Scientific Consultation (JSC) processes.

As a patient or carer, you may:

  • Share your experience, expectations, or concerns about the condition and current treatments.
  • Help inform the assessors about what matters in the assessment (for example, components of quality of life or treatment burden).
  • Review reports and say whether they make sense from a patient’s point of view.
  • Join short online meetings together with clinical experts and other relevant experts if initiated by assessors.

Your experience helps to ensure these processes focus on real patient needs. If selected by one of the Subgroups, you can expect compensation for the time spent contributing to the production of a JCA or a JSC.
